About WhatsApp
WhatsApp is one of the most widely used messaging apps in the world, and for many people it has become the default way to stay in touch with family, friends and colleagues. It is owned by Meta and works on a simple principle: you sign up with your phone number, the app finds the contacts who also use it, and you can start chatting straight away without creating a separate username or password.
The basics are text messages, photos, videos, documents and voice notes. Voice notes are especially popular because they let you reply quickly without typing, and they can be played back at faster speeds when you are short on time. The app also supports voice and video calls over your internet connection, so you can call people in other countries without paying per-minute charges, apart from your normal mobile data or Wi-Fi costs. The developer says group video calls can include up to 32 people, which is useful for family catch-ups and small team meetings.
Groups are the other major feature. You can create a group for a family, a class, a neighbourhood or a project, and share messages, images and files with everyone at once. Group admins can control who joins and who is allowed to post, which helps keep larger chats organised. Many people also use the Status feature to share short text, photo or video updates that disappear after a day, which works like a lightweight story for your contacts.
Privacy is the point the developer stresses most. Personal messages and calls are protected by end-to-end encryption, which means that, according to the company, only you and the person you are talking to can read or hear them. That is a real advantage, although it is worth remembering that encryption does not protect you from someone who has access to your unlocked phone, or from a contact who forwards your message. You can also share your live location with a chosen chat and stop sharing at any time.
A few practical habits make the app safer. Turn on two-step verification in the settings so that nobody can take over your account with only an SMS code. Be cautious with messages that ask for money, one-time codes or urgent action, even if they appear to come from a friend, because scams that imitate contacts are common. Review who can see your profile photo and last seen status, and think before joining large groups from unknown numbers.
WhatsApp suits anyone who wants a reliable, free way to message and call, particularly in places where it is the main channel for family and community communication. It works on mobile and desktop, and it is designed to cope with slow connections. People who want to keep messaging separate from phone numbers may prefer other apps, because a phone number is required here.
The listing shows an enormous install base of more than ten billion and a rating of around 4.6 at the time we added it. The app is free, with no subscription, although normal data charges may apply. Business features and some additional services may have separate terms, which are described on the official page. Check Google Play for the current version, permissions and device requirements.
